The department of Environmental Systems Science is currently organised into six institutes and the department members. Regular members are:

  1. full, associate, assistant and titular professors;
  2. lecturers;
  3. scientific assistants and doctoral students, as well as administrative and technical co-workers, and
  4. bachelor/master students and auditors.

Management bodies

The department's bodies are defined according to the Organisational Ordinance (Organisationsverordnung OV) of ETH Zurich from December 16th, 2003 [RSETHZ 201.021] and the rules of procedure of the D-USYS from October 4th, 2011 [RSETH 320.29] (in German). Department’s Conference

The Department’s Conference is the department’s most senior body. It's members comprise:

Professorial Conference

The primary task of the Professorial Conference is to nominate for election full, associate, assistant, and titular professors, examine and nominate for election candidates for 'Habilitation', propose candidates for an honorary doctorate of the ETH, and also to oversee and provide advice on issues in the realm of teaching.

Its members are all departmental professors with associated members being free to attend in an advisory capacity.

Teaching Commission

In D-USYS each study programme has its own Teaching Commission (TC). The TC functions as an advisory body for all aspects of teaching. It discusses the teaching-related matters of the Department’s Conference, further develops the study course and prepares the relevant proposals.

In this commission the students have the same representation as the assistants and professors. In the TC for Agricultural Science are three representatives of each group; the TC for Environmental Sciences comprises six representatives of each group.

Conference on examinations

The functions and composition of the Conference on Examinations is regulated by AVL ETH Zürich. The conference decides on the rating of the examination subjects. It applies to the Rector to issue passes or fails of a part of the final examination brought forward, respectively an examination level, and to award the diploma.

The Conference is composed of the examiners involved in the examination and a representative of the students as an observer and is headed by the director of studies.

Resource Commission

The Resource Commission oversees all issues related to the department's financial resources, personnel and facilities. It advises, and can make proposals to, the Department’s Conference on these matters.

Members of the Resource Commission are the Department Head (chair), his deputy, representatives from each institute, from the group of scientific, administrative and technical co-workers, and from students.

Executive Board

The Executive Board is tasked by the Department's Conference to overview the current status and plans of the department, and to prepare the business aspects of the Department's Conference.

The board is chaired by the department's head and in addition comprises his delegate, the director of studies, representatives from each institute, and at least one member drawn from the categories "scientific, administrative and technical co-workers" or students.

Doctoral Committee

The tasks of the Doctoral Committee are based on the provisions of the ETH Zürich from 1st July 2008 [RS ETHZ 340.31]. The Doctoral Committee is composed of at least three professors elected by the Department’s Conference. Currently, the Doctoral Committee is composed of the following members:

Research Station Commission

The Research Station Commission comprises two professors of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences (IAS) and one further professor from D-USYS. The Department's Conference elects the members as well as the delegate of the commission .
