Biogeochemists analyse the distribution and transformation of natural and anthropogenic compounds in the earth system. Students of this master course obtain a deeper processlevel understanding and training in the use of adequate scientific tools to quantify biogeochemical cycles in different environmental systems. This interdisciplinary knowledge crosses the boundaries of physics, chemistry and microbiology. It is applied to assess and predict the fate of elements and chemical compounds in aquatic and terrestrial systems.

 

Biogeochemistry is an interdisciplinary science of the physical, chemical and (micro)biological processes controlling the cycles of elements and their compounds. Biogeochemists analyse the response of the earth systems and its parts to chemical changes induced by greenhouse gas emissions, nutrient loads and accelerated cycles of metals and organic substances. Pollutant dynamics integrates the distribution, transformation and the effects of anthropogenic compounds following an agenda to

Students should bring an interest in interdisciplinary approaches, and enthusiasm for a science which switches between field work, laboratory analysis and computer modelling.
