Master student with Major in Human-Environment Systems - Interview

The Major in Human-Environment Systems focuses not only on the components of environmental systems (e.g., climate, forests, resources) and human systems (e.g., social, economic, political) but, more importantly, also on the interplay and inter linkages between these systems. As these systems are interlinked, the study of coupled human-environment systems forms the basis of successful environmental decision-making and sustainable development.

The objective of the Major in Human-Environment Systems is to provide advanced students with knowledge and skills to deal with the structures, regulatory mechanisms and decision processes on the level of individuals (e.g. consumer behavior), organizations (e.g. firms), institutions (e.g. state agencies), and society (e.g. socio-economic impacts of climate change). This is being pursued within the theoretical framework of human-environment systems comprising inter- and transdisciplinary lectures. Quantitative and qualitative methods for scientifically dealing with complex real world problems and a transdisciplinary case study are important issues of this profile. A key component of the major is the Masters Thesis, which is an in depth examination of contribution to research and societal problem solving that addresses this interaction.
