Master student with Major in Forest and Landscape Management - Interview

Landscapes and ecosystems provide a large number of goods and services to humanity. This major provides students with the skills necessary to understand the dynamics of nearnatural ecosystems in a landscape context and to develop management strategies that enable a sustainable use of natural resources. The graduates contribute to the maintenance and management of near-natural ecosystems by creative problemsolving approaches and by integrating interdisciplinary knowledge.

Our challenge is to ensure a sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems and natural resources in the face of continuous changes in society, economy and environment. Forested landscapes have an important role to play as they influence the biogeochemical cycles, have feedbacks on the global climate system, are important for preserving biodiversity, and supply humans with numerous further goods and services.

To cope with this challenge, we need academics that understand the dynamics of near-natural ecosystems in a landscape context and can develop sustainable methods for the management of natural resources. Graduates of the Major in Forest and Landscape Management know the multi-dimensional objectives of landscape use and formation and can bring them together in the framework of actual projects. They have a well-founded understanding of the dynamics of forest and landscape systems and the ability to deal with complex problems, to integrate system and action knowledge and to set up the goal-oriented development and formation of near-natural landscapes. They take on responsible positions in consulting public and private organisations, politics, administration and research.
