Additional information

Rainer Schulin has been Professor of Soil Protection in the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology of the ETH Zurich from April 1990 until July 2017, at first as Associate Professor and since October 1998 as a Full Professor.

Prof. Schulin was born on July 22, 1952. He studied biology and in 1981 was awarded a doctorate in zoology from the University of Zurich (Dr. Phil. II). After a second course of study in forest sciences in Dept. VI of the ETH Zurich, he became a member of the scientific staff of Professor Flühler in Soil Physics at the ETH Zurich from 1983 to1990. During this time he spent several months at the USDA Salinity Laboratory in Riverside, California, and on a second occasion, at the Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge.

With his appointment to the new Chair of Soil Protection, which was established in 1990, Rainer Schulin developed the teaching and research in this discipline. The main focus of research was on assessment, analysis, prevention and remediation of soils degraded by pollution with heavy metals and by compaction due to mechanical stresses by heavy machinery.

Since his retirement, Rainer Schulin is trusted intermediary at ETH for questions and issues concerning research integrity and scientific misconduct (https://ethz.ch/en/the-eth-zurich/organisation/ombudspersons-and-trusted-intermediaries.html).
