This award is given to one scientist worldwide each year for lifetime contributions to the science of hydrology and/or for unselfish cooperation in hydrologic research. It is named after Walter B. Langbein (1907-1982), a pioneer in hydrology and geomorphology, who was always full of ideas and freely gave those ideas and the credit for them to others. The Langbein Lecture has been awarded since 1992. The awardee gives an hour-long lecture at AGU’s annual meeting in December in San Fransisco.
