Bachelor's thesis

The Bachelor's thesis is an independently written, scientific work. It is supervised by a lecturer who teaches in the field of Agricultural Sciences. The thesis represents the completion of the Bachelor's degree.

Guidance: Lecturers who teach in the field of agricultural sciences are entitled to act as supervisor for a Bachelor's thesis.

Supervision: Each Bachelor's thesis is supervised by a co-supervisor. It may happen that the thesis is supervised by a third person (advisor). (Note: only the supervisor and co-supervisor grade the thesis)

Subject:  Subjects for Bachelor's theses can be requested directly from the lecturers. The supervisor of the Bachelor's thesis defines the task.

Registration and approval: Students register their Bachelor's thesis with the Study Administration before they begin. The Study Administration submits the applications for admission to the Departmental Conference in accordance with the Study Regulations 2016.

The Downloadregistration form (PDF, 694 KB) (PDF, 216 KB) must be filled in and signed by the Registrar's Office.

Entering: Students can sign-in for the Bachelor's thesis themselves in myStudies.

Scope: The Bachelor's thesis comprises 14 CP, which corresponds to approximately 420 hours. The start and end date of the written work is scheduled with the supervisor.

The Bachelor's thesis can be written in one of the CH national languages or in English.

Submission: The Student submits her/his BSc thesis (incl. project description and declaration of originality - to be inserted before the table of contents) as PDF to the Supervisor and Co-Supervisor with cc to Study Administration (). Beforehand the Student clarifies with both the Supervisor and the Co-Supervisor whether she/he additionally wants a hardcopy.

⇒ Extension of the deadline: An extension of the deadline (PDF, 112 KB) is possible due to health reasons or unforeseeable forces of nature (e.g. frost) and to be submitted to the Study Coordination with the agreement of the supervisor. The Study Director decides on a possible extension of the deadline.

The Bachelor's thesis is an independently written work. Students are therefore obliged to sign a Downloaddeclaration of originality (PDF, 183 KB) (PDF, 624 KB). The declaration of independence must also be included in the work.

There is no layout restriction e.g. order, picture, Logo (not ETH) but the front page must contain the following information:

  • ETH Logo
  • Thesis type (Bachelor's thesis)
  • Name of the student
  • Student ID no.
  • Degree Programme Agricultural Sciences
  • Title of the Bachelor's thesis
  • Supervisor and Co-Supervisor, with their academic institution
    • note: both grade the thesis
  • Advisor, with academic institution
    • note: only if applicable; doesn't grade the thesis
  • Date of submission (dd/mm/yyyy)
  • Note "Confidential" *

The supervisor and the co-supervisor each grade the thesis. The final grade is calculated as the arithmetic mean of the two grades. The criteria for the assessment of the written paper are shown on the evaluation sheet (Downloadin German (PDF, 27 KB) / Downloadin English (PDF, 26 KB)).

Students with Swiss citizenship: Applications can be submitted to the Hochstrasser Foundation for the co-financing of living expenses and travel expenses (excluding meals) for bachelor's theses abroad. The application form can be obtained from Ms. , Institute Administration of Agricultural Sciences, LFW C3.
